Boss of a prostitution ring used by disgraced former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer should serve at least two years in prison, prosecutors said Tuesday. In papers filed in U.S. District Court, they argued Mark Brener earned "substantial punishment" with his role in the business and should receive the two to two and a half years in prison that was included in his plea agreement.Brener pleaded guilty last year to conspiracy to commit a prostitution offense and conspiracy to commit money laundering. He's scheduled to be sentenced Friday.Prosecutors cited his position as head of Emperors Club VIP and criticized his contrition, saying it didn't seem sincere."That the defendant continues to insist upon his moral rectitude and his legitimate intentions with respect to the Emperors Club raises a serious concern about the defendant's potential recidivism," prosecutors wrote.Brener lawyer Murray Richman noted his client is 63 and said "time alone will prohibit the likelihood of him doing this again.""In no way does Mr. Brener try to avoid his responsibility," Richman said. "He recognizes he did wrong."The lawyer noted that his client has been in prison since his arrest last March, when Spitzer resigned after it was revealed he had met one of the Emperors Club's prostitutes at a Washington, D.C., hotel weeks earlier.Prosecutors said in November they would not charge Spitzer after investigators found no evidence that he misused public or campaign funds for prostitution. The federal government typically does not prosecute clients of prostitution rings. The manager of the escort service was sentenced to six months in prison last week. A booking agent received a year of probation and a second booking agent is awaiting sentencing.

New Haven Police Department officer who was caught with a prostitute in his car in September was sentenced to a special form of probation
New Haven Police Department officer who was caught with a prostitute in his car in September was sentenced to a special form of probation that will last one year. If the officer, Sam Streater, completes the accelerated rehabilitation program without getting in trouble, his criminal record will be cleared. Supervisory State’s Attorney David Strollo told the New Haven Register Monday that Streater was not given any special treatment and that this type of program is common for first-time offenders. As a result of the incident, in November Streater was suspended without pay for two weeks. The Register reported that the police union has filed a grievance, saying that because Streater was off duty at the time of the incident he should not have been suspended

serial prostitute killer in Hong Kong.

Serial Killing caused a stir in HongKong.....while everyone was absorbing the local news every evening, I was busily keeping track of the serial prostitute killer in Hong Kong. As one of the world's safest major cities, Hong Kong rarely reported murders or other violent crimes....hence it sort of created a buzz....And yes, I saw in the news yesterday, they finally napped the suspect - a 24 year old man, a Pakistani national.A manhunt was launched across the city after the bodies of four prostitutes were found between Saturday and Monday in the flats where they entertained clients. Under Hong Kong law, prostitution is legal if carried out by one woman operating alone in a single location. The first victim, a 35-year-old prostitute, was found Saturday strangled with a shower hose in the bathroom of her home in the city's Yuen Long district near its border with mainland China.
On Sunday morning, a 30-year-old prostitute died in hospital after being found unconscious in her flat in nearby Tai Po. A third victim, 35, was found in her flat Monday morning, also in Tai Po. The fourth victim, a 27-year-old prostitute, was found dead in the city's North Point district hours later on Monday afternoon. She is believed to have been dead for some time. In each case, the prostitutes were apparently strangled and their flats ransacked for money. The killings caused widespread fear and panic among the city's prostitutes, many of whom come to Hong Kong from neighbouring mainland China. Groups representing sex workers staged a protest at police HQ in Hong Kong Tuesday, demanding talks with the commissioner and greater protecetion for prostitutes in the city of 6.9 million. This case is strikingly similar to the 2006 British case of the "Suffolk Strangler" when the bodies of 5 protitutes were found in the space of 10 days....
I brought this topic up during our lunch time...and discuss with the ladies. They found it interesting.....somehow they found some similarity between the recent series - "Forensic Heroes"...

oldest profession in the world has found itself a haven on the Southeast side of San Antonio
For years, the oldest profession in the world has found itself a haven on the Southeast side of San Antonio.Parts of South Presa Street have become a noticeable stomping ground for prostitutes. But a December 2008 city ordinance has made hotels and motels unable to rent rooms for less than 12 hours. The ordinance was specifically aimed at curbing rent-by-the-hour motels, which are often centers of illegal activities like prostitution and drug use.Officials said the new ordinance has caused a decline of prostitution in the area, but is by no means a quick fix.
“It hasn't necessarily cured the problem overnight,” said District 3 Councilwoman Jennifer V. Ramos, who spearheaded the new ordinance. “We're still working on problems.”Ramos wants to update the penalties of the ordinance and is holding meetings with the public safety committee. She hopes by March or April the ordinance will be presented to the board once again for review. Hot Wells Neighborhood Association president Jerry Hess said he has seen a decrease in prostitutes walking down the South Presa corridor.“I don't see many people out and about,” Hess said.
“I do, however, see an occasional girl dropped off in the neighborhood.”
Hess said perhaps that motel and hotel owners are suffering due to the lack of business with the newly enacted ordinance.Calls to area motels and hotels were unanswered to comment on the issue.Gaspers Motel, located at 5400 S. Presa, owners said they haven't had an issue with prostitution. But prostitutes are finding ways to go about the problem, officials said.According to New Frontiers Charter School Chief Executive Officer Alfredo Segura Jr., the area of the school was once heavily frequented by prostitutes. New Frontiers Charter School is located at 4018 S. Presa St.Segura said they have noticed the prostitution problem move further down the street. “We have not seen any in our area,” Segura said.In the past, Segura said he had the school assign teachers to patrol the area. If they saw any activity they immediately called the authorities.Segura also said the problem has moved around the area near the Presa Community Center. Calls to Presa Community Center were not returned for comment. “We're temporarily located at Topeka Boulevard and we have seen a rise in activity there,” Segura said.“Overall the city of San Antonio is taking a strong stance. I think the ordinance has helped clean the area, but it's also shifted activity.”

"Manhattan Madam," the buxom, bottle-blond who was jailed for three months for her role in a high-end escort service

"Manhattan Madam," the buxom, bottle-blond who was jailed for three months for her role in a high-end escort service, told police she was sexually assaulted in her Queens apartment Friday night.Kristin Davis claimed she was attacked by a man who forced his way into her Sunnyside apartment. "He pushes me up against the wall and says, 'You are so beautiful' and he tore open my shirt and fondled my boobs and put his hand down my pants," claimed Davis. She said the clean-cut suspect was wearing $300 jeans and gained access by following another tenant inside her building. Police Friday night were interviewing neighbors who may have heard Davis' screams for help after the man pushed his way into her apartment around 6 p.m. The man followed Davis home after first offering to carry her grocery bags, a favor the former madam saidshe initially declined before later accepting. "He keeps it up, and I finally let him carry some bags," recalled Davis, 32. "We get to the gate and he asks if he can come in. I say, 'No,' but tip him $10 since I was slipping and sliding in the snow."
"He was not a homeless man," added Davis. "He was wearing $300 jeans and a $200 shirt." A 911 call from Davis was initially filed as a burglary, with a report that a man had stolen her wallet after she had let him into her apartment, police sources said. He said, "I better watch my back," as he left the apartment, Davis said.
She said she has been getting telephone threats since she began promoting a soon-to-be-published tell-all book she says will name the 2,000 clients who paid to have sex with her hookers, including former Gov. Spitzer gal pal Ashley Dupre. "This past week I have been doing, like, 30 radio interviews polling America on what I should do with my client list," Davis said Friday night, moments before police arrived to interview her sexual assault claim. "I have kept silent about it because I believed in protecting the identity of my clients," Davis added. "But now, as I see the arrogance of Spitzer and how so many of these (hedge-fund and broker) people are ruining people's lives, at the end of the day they haven't helped me. So since these radio shows I have been receiving threats." Davis was busted last March and spent three months in jail for her role in Wicked Models, Maison de L'Amour and New York Body Miracle.

AIDS awareness campaign organised by sex workers at GB Road, Delhi
AIDS awareness campaign organised by sex workers at GB Road, Delhi
It was Sunday morning, some 4 months back and I met one of old school friends- Gayatri Pradhan, who is with times group functioning as a journalist, she was about to wrap a report on GB road, so I on her request decided to join. This is what was made out of that visit to the red light area of Delhi.
Long History: There were five red-light areas in Delhi during the Mughal era. But the British closed all except the one at GB Road, named after a British collector. In 1965, the name was officially changed to Swami Shradhanand Marg. But peopleprefer to call this area as GB Road. This place has 20 buildings. Besides prostitution, this area is famous for renowned hardware materials. It is a place where prostitutes are available for all classes of customers. Surprisingly, people from all strata of society come to this place for their carnal pleasures.
How they got into this work? All have different story to tell.
“I left home and came to Delhi, one man told me that he will give me some work and I was sold at Rs8000/-“says Moly
“I left home and wanted to do something for my ailing father and poor family but landed here, not forcefully, but I had no choice” says Rupali
“I was born here to a prostitute as my mother was doing same work for years, I tried to get into civilized society but discovered that I wasn’t accepted any where, I had to get into flesh trade” says Pushpa.
RABEYA, MOLY, Pushpa, Sabina and many more like them cannot memorize when they last lived a normal life. Generally, their day’s routine begins little later than that of others. Unlike other professionals, they don’t have to get up early in the morning and prepare for office. They are not concerned about the traffic jam that keeps almost every Delhitie tense during peak hours of the day. For obvious reasons, they don’t prefer to come out in broad daylight. Only after the dusk enters in, does their day begin. Their service hours commence from the evening up to almost the wee hours of the next morning. They work without any leave. Unlike others, holidays make their work schedule even more hectic. These people work like anyone else but they do not have any reporting boss, month and date is no criterion for their salaries, its all instant for these women . All these girls are not as high-salaried as the call centre employees, who also work throughout the night in air-conditioned office and serve for their foreign clients. But girls like Moly, Pushpa, Sabina serve for both the Indian and foreign nationals. They say that they can’t remember who initiated them into this profession.Every night, they toil hard to please their customers so that they can get good tips after the service. They have only one identity – the civilized society refers to them as ’prostitutes’. These ’kothewalis’ have no fancy designations. As the evening enters in, these ’kothewalis’ doll up in attractive saris, salwar suits or western dresses. After being bedecked, they come out on roads or wait in the balcony to attract their clients. They prefer to wait in such places where traffic is not too thick. The clients, they say, come on their own and pick them up. After that either they are brought to a hotel, farm house or to a small ’kothas’ (rooms) in Garstin Bastion Road, commonly known as ’GB Road’, the largest red light area in Delhi.
Some of the ’kothewalis’ do not have to go outside as they have their own ’dalals’ (pimps). These pimps bring clients after proper bargaining. Even, the payments are dealt by these men.
What they have to say:
Moly, a 22-year-old girl, can’t remember from when she has been here. When asked, she said, “I was brought here by one uncle. He promised me a job. But now, I am a brand prostitute.”
How does she carry on her life now? “I generally prefer to be picked up by my clients. Actually, I share a single room with Pushpa. As she gets busy during night, I have to vacate her room,” Moly laughed with a wink.
While asked whether she enjoys every night outside, she replied, “It depends upon the client, as to where he takes me. Generally, the Paharganj hotels are available for one or two nights. There are few good and nice clients with whom I have stayed for even two consecutive nights.”Perhaps, Moly enjoys better in air-conditioned hotels rather than staying in GB Road ’kothas’.When asked whether she gets a client every night,She answered, “It matters upon seasons. Generally, I get clients for 18 days at least in a month. If I do not get anyone by 9 pm, I come back to my kotha."
Where does she stay then?“For those nights, I share rooms with my friends, who also do not get clients on that day. Sometimes, Pushpa also goes vacant. I stay with her then,” Moly giggled again.Pushpa seems to be more professional than Moly.
She has been in this business for the last 10 years. Born and brought up in Muzaffarpur district of Bihar, Pushpa chose this profession to earn her livelihood. Once she reached GB Road, she never visited her house again. Pushpa’s parents are still alive; whom she sends money every month. But, her parent neither calls her nor visit her GB Road apartment, she said with a sad glint in her eyes.Pushpa has her pimp, named Pappu. “Pappu is very believable, he never cheats me”, said Pushpa, “He gets his share regularly. But he brings good clients.”
What is the definition of good clients to them?
Those, who do not bargain too much, pay properly before and after the service, remain gentle throughout the service-hours are referred to them as ’good clients’.
Who are the worst clients?
“Army”, was the collective answer."Almost all of them complained that the armed forces a personnel’s come in groups, get service and leave them unpaid. “We are also workers, our brand is that of a ’sex-worker’, but they do not pay us,” complained Moly.
Even, the dalals also don’t dare to take on these people as they are ’powerful’.
"We keep these pimps to control our clients,” said Rabeya, another friend of Pushpa. She is also in the same profession. According to Rabeya, there are some clients who are very rude and ruthless."They take the service, but do not pay after that. Instead of getting paid, Rabeya was once beaten up brutally. She lost became unconscious after that. She did not dare to file a complaint with the police, as the client was socially powerful and threatened to kill her, all this for a paltry sum.Rabeya has a two-year-old baby, named Raju. “
"Who’ll feed him if I am not alive?” Rabeya’s voice broke as her eyes were moist with tears.
When asked about Raju’s father, Rabeya laughed innocently.
“Perhaps he is somewhere in ’Hindustan’, I don’t know the location.” The touts act as local guardians of 4500 sex-workers in the GB Road. These dalals maintain good relations with the local political leaders, send ’hafta’ (regular bribes) to police stations and take care of their ’sisters’ when need arises.“They are our tarzans,” said Rabeya., while expressing gratitude to her guardian.
How much do they earn?
"On an average, from their client, asked this scribe? “It varies”, replied Rabeya, “sometimes when dhanda is not well, we have to sell ourselves for as low as Rs 200. But during festivals, the ’bazaar’ (market) is good. We easily earn at least Rs 1000 per night. This is because not a single client wants to return with empty hand during the festive eves.”
Who comes here?
“Almost everyone, you’ll find here people from different strata of society From auto-rickshaw pullers to white-collared professionals - they enjoy us”, Rabeya replied without batting an eyelid“We have some permanent clients”, said Moly.
Do the Delhities visit GB Road only?
“People from different cities come here. Even the foreign nationals visit this place,” said Sabina.
What are their plans for Diwali?
“Nothing special, obviously, there will be heavy rush of clients during Diwali. Some of us have already been booked in advance. Some others are still waiting for good offers”, said Rabeya.
Do they decorate their house with candles during Diwali? Do their children enjoy crackers? Do they wear new dresses?
“Yes, we do, we light up candles, buy crackers for our children and we also wear new garments. We also distribute sweets. But after everything, we take a strong peg of whiskey and plunge into our routine life – to please men,” said Rabeya.
Rabeya, Moly, Sabina, Pushpa and many others like them are actually trapped between a ’yesterday’ that would never come again and a ’tomorrow’ that they may never see!

convicted prostitute is accused of being an angry, serial firebug.
Gina Ann Gray, 42, of Hamilton, told investigators that she set at least at least 10 addresses ablaze “because she was angry,” said Tom Angst, Hamilton fire investigator. Damage totals in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.Following a joint probe by the city’s fire and police departments, Gray was arrested Tuesday on seven counts of aggravated arson and three counts of arson. Between September 2007 and this past November, Gray set fire to several homes and garages. Sometimes, Gray sought revenge against people at those addresses. Other times, “she’d just be walking past and spot something flammable against the side of a house, set fire to it with her lighter and keep on walking,” Angst said.Gray’s arrests date to 1994, including several soliciting convictions and a 1996 arson conviction, Butler County and Hamilton city court records show. Arson accounted for 11 fire deaths in Ohio last year, but no one was killed in the fires allegedly set by Gray.

Second Life to live out her fantasies of being a prostitute.

She goes by the name of Palela Anderson, and she (if she is a she) has used Second Life to live out her fantasies of being a prostitute. "We have street prostitution here in Italy, and I have always wanted to be one of them," confesses Anderson. "As a teenager I would watch these sexy women walking the streets, waiting for the cars to stop, teasing the guys, and then hopping in and getting out sometime later."I’m not sure why I find it such a turn-on. I think it’s because when a man will pay to have you, you know he really desires you. It’s proof that you’re really wanted."Yeah … I’m not sure the prostitute/client relationship works quite like that, but I’m not about to upset the apple cart. Continuing her tale, Palela anonymously recounts how she tried being a dirty prozzer in real life, but "In the end, I refused all the dates I got. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to do it, not at all. It was because I was afraid of being discovered by my family. They would have never accepted it, and I didn’t want to hurt them or make them ashamed of me."Palela claims she looks like her Second Life avatar, which means that this make-believe whore might, in actual fact, be Janet Jackson in reality. She charges 2000-3000 Linden Dollars for a single evening and, in case you couldn’t have guessed by now — she doesn’t have a boyfriend. Yet more proof that Second Life is a good thing. After all, it keeps these people indoors.

Jeremy Noyes claimed he wanted to use the woman and her daughter to start a "society" of sex slaves that would live on a farm or an island
A medical student told a classmate he was trying to recruit a New Zealand woman and her 4-year-old daughter to be his sex slaves, and a search by federal agents found that he possessed child pornography, authorities said.Jeremy Noyes claimed he wanted to use the woman and her daughter to start a "society" of sex slaves that would live on a farm or an island, the classmate told the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
The FBI said in an affidavit filed Aug. 13 that it began investigating Noyes, 30, after someone tipped them off about his efforts to recruit a woman and her daughter from New Zealand to come to the United States.Investigators got warrants to search Noyes' two e-mail accounts and found "numerous images of prepubescent minors engaged in sexually explicit activity," the FBI wrote in the affidavit. The images Noyes is accused of sending and receiving do not depict the New Zealand woman or her daughter. Special Agent William Crowley, the FBI's western Pennsylvania spokesman, on Tuesday could not say if authorities have determined whether they even exist.
The tipster's note to the FBI led the agency to interview a woman who attended school with Noyes at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. The classmate told the FBI she had dated Noyes and acted as his sex slave.
She also detailed Noyes' plans for a woman in New Zealand who is pregnant, and her daughter, the affidavit said."Noyes intended to impregnate (the 4-year-old) when she was between the ages of 8 and 14 and then continue to breed the future offspring that would result from his plan," Noyes' classmate told the FBI. "Noyes intends to buy a farm or an island where he could put his new society together."
Noyes was in custody Tuesday and faces a hearing before a federal magistrate in Erie on Thursday to determine if he will remain jailed until he stands trial. He is represented by a federal public defender whose office has a policy of not commenting to the media. The FBI investigation said it found women who corresponded with Noyes online and, in turn, the child-sex images in his e-mail account earlier this month.
Noyes faces up to 40 years in prison if he is convicted of the child pornography charges.

The prostitutes like to stand at an alley by the entrance to Cally Park - opposite a children's playground and the tennis centre
PROSTITUTES are back on what was once the main red light district in the borough.
Residents fought hard three years ago to rid Market Road, Holloway, of prostitutes and kerb crawlers who had moved up from King's Cross. But the problem has returned, says Brenda Kyriacou, 60, who represents residents on the York Way Estate, which is on the corner of Market Road.Mrs Kyriacou said: "It was nice and quiet for some time. Now we are inundated with prostitutes on our estate and on Market Road.
"The other night, at 7.15pm, there were four or five walking up and down Market Road. We know them all by sight now because we see them approaching cars and we see cars approaching them." Mrs Kyriacou, who at the height of the problems was herself propositioned by a kerb crawler, said: "We had all this before two or three years ago, when boys were even getting approached at bus stops. We are worried it's going to turn into what it was like before - when it was bad, really bad."
Sharon Jobe, 48, chairwoman of the Market Estate tenants' and residents' association, in nearby North Road, agreed: "They are back. It's morning, afternoon and night. The prostitutes like to stand at an alley by the entrance to Cally Park - opposite a children's playground and the tennis centre. I think they have started coming back because of the better weather.
"But there is no way it's going to go anywhere near as bad as it was before - I won't let it. Then there would be eight or nine at a time."
An Islington police spokesman said: "Holloway Safer Neighbourhood Team has noticed a small increase in sex workers in Market Road in the last six weeks
"As such, they have increased patrols around the park resulting in the recent arrest of two sex workers. In recent years, the team has been very successful in reducing the number of prostitutes. They will continue to monitor the area until it is free of sex workers.

Men outnumber women 3 to 1 in Dubai, and the variety of places to purchase sex is abundant
Men outnumber women 3 to 1 in Dubai, and the variety of places to purchase sex is abundant -- from the brothels where Vika described being sold and resold and the back alleys where migrant workers pay for a few minutes of pleasure, to the mainstream Westernized nightclubs, often inside upscale hotels, where women from all over the world congregate according to their nationalities awaiting the next client.
Dubai has been described as the Las Vegas of the Middle East. Emerging as a world business hub in the last decade, the city strives to keep breaking new records: the world's tallest building, the world's first seven star hotel, the world's biggest shopping mall, the world's largest manmade port. Dubai's free trade zone is a major enticement for foreign investors, and the boomtown atmosphere has attracted more than 180 nationalities to come live and work here. In this playground of the Middle East, I found indoor ski slopes, camel races and dizzying skyscrapers.
When I arrived to report this story with my video camerawoman Sachi Cunningham, I was prepared to confront the human degradation of Vika's experience, but I was surprised to find something else. I met women working as prostitutes who told me that they were doing so because they had chosen to. Sasha, for example, was trafficked from Siberia and serviced clients against her will. But then she managed to run away from her madam and decided to continue to work as a prostitute on her own. Her English was good, so I asked her why she didn't find a job as a salesperson in one of the many shopping malls in Dubai. She said she could earn more in one night as a prostitute than working a whole month in sales. And she wouldn't have to stand on her feet all day. Like many other girls I spoke with, Sasha charges $500 dirhams per hour (about US$140). She told me that the money she sends home to Siberia has allowed her family to build a house.
I met another woman from Azerbaijan who was living with a "boyfriend," the term she used to describe one of her regular clients. She told me how he would often lock her in the apartment to keep her services exclusively for himself. When I first met her, she talked about her son back home and how she had sent money to buy him his first computer. The second time we met, she was drunk and missing a front tooth. When I asked her what had happened, she shrugged it off: "We got into a fight, he punched me," she said, lighting up another cigarette.
In a Muslim country, where prostitution is illegal, we decided the only way to get a closer look at Dubai's barely disguised sex trade was to visit some of these clubs and capture for ourselves the city's night secrets.

Eddie Couto is accused of kidnapping and raping a 27-year-old woman, who police said might have been mistaken for a prostitute
Eddie Couto, 39, of 93 Swift St. is being held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing Friday in District Court.
He is accused of kidnapping and raping a 27-year-old woman, who police said might have been mistaken for a prostitute, while she was walking home on Ashley Boulevard Sunday evening.
The woman told police the suspect pulled alongside her in a black Ford F-150 pickup truck and offered her a ride to escape the heat. She accepted the invitation, but Mr. Couto drove in the opposite direction of where he had agreed to take her, police said.
The woman told police that Mr. Couto drove to the old Sacred Heart Cemetery on Mount Pleasant Street, where he raped her. Police said she ran from the vehicle, but Mr. Couto chased her, tackled her to the ground, punched her in the face and dragged her back to his truck.
The victim said Mr. Couto later dropped her off near Acushnet Avenue.
The victim reported the alleged attack to police officer George Borden, who identified Mr. Couto as a suspect. He had known of Mr. Couto from previous street-level encounters, police said.
The victim identified Mr. Couto from a photo lineup, court records said.
New Bedford police spokesman Lt. Jeffrey P. Silva said patrol officers had received prior information from street-level sources about Mr. Couto.
“That special population of the community is frequently targeted,” Lt. Silva said. “It’s a known fact they’re often reticent to come forward because they’re drug-dependent, and their personal safety depends on the people they encounter on the street.”
Lt. Silva said police are concerned that there might be other victims who have not come forward or who might have had encounters with Mr. Couto but did not know his identity.

In a pair of targeted busts in the Southeast -- one in Macon, Ga., and the other in Broward County, Fla. -- police arrested what they said were dozens of prostitutes hiding behind the guise of massage therapy to sell customers sexual favors.
Over two phases of "Operation Massage Parlor," undercover officers from the Macon Police Department have made 21 arrests at eight different businesses across the 100,000-population Central Georgia city.
Various charges include keeping a house of prostitution, masturbation for hire, solicitation of prostitution and simple prostitution, according to Macon police. The suspects range in age from 17 to 70 and were arrested between June 26 and 27, and July 15 and 17. Massage may be an ancient form of therapy, but prostitution is the oldest profession on earth. "The woman would solicit the sexual act and at that time the officer would identify himself as a police officer and would make an arrest," Sgt. Melanie Hoffman, spokeswoman for the Macon Police Department, told ABCNews.com.
Five establishments were shut down in Macon and arrests were made at several others. In only two of the parlors targeted by police did the women not offer undercover officers sexual favors for money.
In the second phase of the operation, carried out last week, Macon officers arrested three women at the All American Spa and Massage on Wednesday and came back the following night to make two more arrests at the same location.
There are more than 5,000 licensed massage therapists in the state of Georgia, according to the secretary of state's office. Licenses require practitioners to receive training that educates them on the do's and don'ts of massage therapy -- including restrictions on sexual contact.
Macon Mayor Robert Reichert said that many local massage parlors go to great lengths to circumvent license restrictions while presenting would-be customers with advertisements heavy on sexual overtones. Billboards on the drive into the city, he said, feature attractive women with "seductive looks" offering massage services.
"This is one we're not going to ignore, that's the message," Reichart said. "We're willing to spend the money on manpower to break it up as a community."
Reichart said that some of the businesses busted even had in-house ATMs. "Here's the oldest profession in the world and they're keeping up with the times," he said. "They got billboards, they're on the Internet and they've got ATMs inside their locations."
In Macon, the issue is not exactly a new one. "We've actually been doing undercover operations at massage parlors since they came to town in the late 1990s," Hoffman, the police spokeswoman, said.
Meanwile, on Friday, July 18, the sheriff's office in Broward County, Fla., made 21 arrests in 14 different massage parlors during an operation they dubbed Red Light.
Officers swarmed locations with names like 7th Heaven, Roosters and Golden Eye. They also responded to two individual homes where women had advertised massage services in local publications, according to a Broward County Sheriff's Office statement. Charges against the suspects there included unlicensed massage, offering to secure lewd acts, and prostitution.
The investigation into the establishments began about a month ago, according to Keyla Concepcion, spokeswoman for the Broward County Sheriff's Office, in response to a flurry of citizen complaints.
"This was the best way to get the most bang for our time," Concepcion said. "We were able to dedicate about a month, investigate, and go out and make all these arrests at once."
Like Georgia, Florida has very specific laws governing the massage therapy industry. The state's massage therapy board addresses sexual contact between therapists and patients explicitly. "The massage therapist-patient relationship is founded on mutual trust," according to the state's massage therapy rules. "Sexual misconduct in the practice of massage therapy is prohibited."
In fact, 38 of 50 states have laws governing the massage therapy industry, according to the American Massage Therapy Association. Most of those require 500 or more hours of education, fees and examinations before a license will be issued.
M.K. Brennan, president of the AMTA, acknowledged that headlines like those out of Georgia and Florida, along with some portrayals of massage therapy in both news media and popular culture can be a nuisance, giving the impression that sexual favors are widely available at massage therapy centers.
"Don't call them massage parlors if they are not offering massage therapy as we have set it to be," Brennan said, describing the rigid licensing restrictions most therapists face and which her organization works to strengthen.
One of their ongoing goals, she said, is to disassociate prostitution from the overwhelming majority of massage therapists who offer legitimate wellness services. Brennan even cringed at the language like massage "parlor" and "masseuse," claiming that the words' connotations are misleadingly suggestive.
Massage therapists work in massage therapy centers, she said.
Brennan said they have made some positive strides in eroding these stereotypes. "We do believe the vast majority of Americans know the value and legitimacy of massage therapy," she said.

Anthony Pryor, 69, and his Chinese wife Quing Hua, 37, earned thousands from their seedy business interests before they were eventually caught
Anthony Pryor, 69, and his Chinese wife Quing Hua, 37, earned thousands from their seedy business interests before they were eventually caught and jailed.
The Pryors operated a brothel, offering sex with Chinese immigrant prostitutes, from an address in Ipswich's Chevallier Street. They also ran similar sex dens in Sudbury and Braintree. It is understood they raked in more than £150,000, which the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) is hoping to recover. A Proceeds of Crime Act confiscation order has been served on the couple, which is expected to be heard in September.
A spokesman for Essex CPS said statements of representation had been served upon the Pryors' lawyers. Hua also faces deportation after she completes her sentence as she is an illegal immigrant. The couple, of The Plain, Epping, were placed under surveillance in January 2006 and were arrested in June of that year. They were found guilty by a jury on January 29 this year. During their trial, the judge said that while there was no evidence to support the view the couple were involved in people-trafficking their Chinese prostitutes, those with whom they had associated, probably were. The crimes were described as “shameful, seedy and depraved”.The couple were told to expect to serve half of their 18-month terms in prison and half on licence.

‘Soldier Bar' to be demolished
Greater Accra Region alone is said to be housing about 125 brothels in which girl prostitutes who fall within the ages of 12 and 16 conduct brisk businesses at night.
These girls are said to be servicing about 20 male clients per night at a charge of GH¢3.00 for every three minutes spent at one of the most notorious brothels known as the 'Soldier Bar'. A similar practice is also going on at other places in the capital city of Accra. These brothels, according to Theresa Tagoe, Deputy Greater Accra Regional Minister who made a statement on Child Prostitution on the floor of Parliament yesterday, are located at Kwame Nkrumah Circle, Abeka, Lapaz, Kasoa (in the Central Region), New Town and other areas. It is against this backdrop that Members of Parliamentare calling on the Accra Metropolitan Assembly to team up with relevant agencies to immediately demolish the ‘Soldier Bar'. In addition, the MPs also want all other identifiable brothels and edifices that house such young prostitutes in all parts of the country demolished, to ensure that the growing canker of child prostitution is nipped in the bud. Throwing more light on the activities, Ms Tagoe indicated that "these girls are required to pay GH¢2.00 to proprietors of such brothels and keep the rest of their daily income to themselves".This, she said, came to light when the Parliamentary Caucus on Population visited the ‘Soldier Bar’ to get first-hand information about activities of child prostitutes at the place. "Mr. Speaker, the place operates as a lorry park and a brothel. A tour of the place revealed that it has 12 cubicles with no windows, but has mattresses". She wondered why it has taken so long for AMA to demolish the place since according to her, the Assembly had marked out the area for demolishing long before their visit.
"Mr Speaker, it would be very much appreciated if the Chief Executive of AMA would initiate appropriate actions through its relevant agencies to have the structure demolished with immediate effect". The issue of child prostitution is becoming a social canker which is eating into the moral fiber of the Ghanaian society", she added. The Legislators also called on parents to take the upbringing of their children seriously and impart decent and essential values into them during their formative years so that they will not depart from it when they grow up.
According to her, early exposure to pornographic materials also contributes to child prostitution in the sense that vulnerable, gullible children will try to practice almost whatever they see in movies and in the newspapers.
To ensure that this practice is reduced to the barest minimum or stopped entirely, she called for the proper enforcement of Act 560 - the Children’s Act - passed in 1998, and urged district assemblies to set up committees on children to monitor and direct them when they go wayward.
This, she stressed, would ensure that children who are into such practices and risk contracting HIV\AIDS, are saved, as they form the "window of hope" that is often described by the Ghana AIDS Commission.

Daulatdia, in Bangladesh, is one of the largest brothels in the world
Daulatdia, in Bangladesh, is one of the largest brothels in the world - a village of 1,600 women who sell sex to 3,000 men every day.
Arriving at the port of Goalundo Ghat, you would never guess that it houses a brothel visited by 3,000 men every day. Walk just a few paces down a tiny sidestreet, though, and you come to another world entirely: Daulatdia, the biggest brothel in Bangladesh. A settlement big enough to count as a village in its own right, this mass of alleyways is where 1,600 women and girls live and sell sex.
The brothel opened 20 years ago, making it the newest and largest of the 14 recognised brothels in the country. The brothel feels like a vast street market. There are lines of fruit and vegetable stalls, tea stands and even a TV repairer. The only immediately visible difference between this and all the other small towns I've visited in Bangladesh is the presence of so many women in public. The extraordinary thing about Daulatdia is its size and its unexpectedly open atmosphere. Turning down an alleyway, I am directed past a piece of fabric draped across a doorway and find myself in the middle of someone's room. A post-coital client is enjoying a cigarette, and hurriedly ties a sarong around his waist, scuttles off the bed and away. There's a TV, a DVD player, a fan and a glass cabinet containing clothes. This is one of the better rooms. The woman who rents it can afford to employ a cook — a retired prostitute who is crouching outside in the narrow alleyway, preparing a chilli omelette.
In the next cubicle I meet Parveen, who is happy to show me around. "It's OK because I groom myself well. I spend two hours getting ready and then I wait outside. If I want to earn 100 taka, I have to spend at least 40 taka on my face and clothes." As an independent prostitute, Parveen can keep any remaining money once she has paid the high electricity charges, her rent and the cost of childcare in a local village. "I left my two children outside the brothel because I don't want them to grow up in this environment." Yet more than 300 children do live inside the brothel with their mothers, kept under the bed or outside with the cook when a client arrives. The women I meet tell me that whenever they're pregnant, they hope for daughters who can join them working in the brothel as soon as they are old enough. The bonded prostitutes, known as chukri, have the least freedom. Their average age on entering the brothel is 14; they have usually been kidnapped by gangs, sold by stepmothers, or lured here by boyfriends. In the brothel hierarchy, those who are bonded have the least freedom, but even those who chose to come here have no alternative. The far end of the alleyway gives way to a green field where a few goats are grazing. Women in prostitution here have no rights to burial in consecrated ground, so this peaceful field behind the brothel is their graveyard.

São Cristóvão and São Lourenço gang of 16 prostitutes operating in the area.
Residents in the capital’s São Cristóvão and São Lourenço neighbourhoods are concerned by the lack of action on the police’s behalf with regards to a group of 16 prostitutes operating in the area.Their concerns were voiced in a meeting with the local city hall, though claim authorities are taking a ‘passive’ stance.
A representative for the residents said their main gripe was that the prostitutes were “giving the area a notorious reputation, bringing with them social problems, safety issues, and health worries generally associated to their line of activity”.
Locals are demanding the City Hall take action to minimize the impact on the area, as well as the closing of a local Bed & Breakfast, which reportedly rents room by the hour, accommodating the prostitutes’ profession.Lisbon Mayor António Costa said he was aware of the problem and the City Hall was “acting accordingly”. He further explained that municipal police had carried out 36 checks on the B&B, since March 7th, though “every time they go there the establishment is closed

Chinese madam Li Yang brought Chinese women from London by train to staff it as a prostitution centre

Chinese madam Li Yang, 34, and her boyfriend Peiwen Shi, 26, who held the purse strings, took a lease on a house in Balmoral Street, South Bank, and brought Chinese women from London by train to staff it as a prostitution centre.Men could get half an hour's sex for £60 and an hour for £100. But police went undercover to reveal the secrets behind the massage parlour front, said Simon Hickey prosecuting, at York Crown Court. The Recorder of York, Judge Stephen Ashurst, said: "Sentence has to be passed to discourage other like-minded people from setting illegal brothels in York. I also take into account the very recent increase in the number of such brothels being set up by those from Eastern Europe and, as in this case, the Far East.
"Both of you went into this operation with open eyes and both of you were aware of the risks you were running."He jailed Shi for 21 months and Yang for 15 and recommended both for deportation. Yang, who was arrested at the brothel, and Shi, who was arrested at a London address, both admitted being involved in running a brothel between August 29 and mid-December, and laundering its criminal profits. Neither has a fixed address in this country. Yang arrived illegally and Shi is currently on a student's visa, due to expire in 2009.Barristers for both claimed they had poor English and, therefore, difficulty in an English jail.
But the judge pointed out that Shi was studying for an English degree in business administration and Yang was able to welcome punters to the brothel and arrange payment. For Yang, Taryn Turner said the Chinese authorities fined her when she gave birth to a second child and could no longer support her children. So she left them with family and came to England. She had got little profit personally from the brothel. For Shi, Martin Sharpe said a third Chinese, who owed Shi a debt and has since been deported, was involved in setting up the brothel.

Converted the apartments into brothels, where they clandestinely engaged in the ‘flesh’ trade
Farwaniya securitymen on Thursday arrested four Asian pimps and ten prostitutes when they raided two apartments that had been under surveillance for some time.
Colonel Nassar Al-Otaibi, the team leader, said the operation was carried out in line with a directive from Farwaniya Security Department Chief Brigadier Mezyed Al-Harbi. He revealed the suspects had converted the apartments into brothels, where they clandestinely engaged in the ‘flesh’ trade. He added undercover agents closely monitored the activities of the group for quite some time to gather enough evidence before raiding the apartments.
The suspects were referred to the concerned authorities to take the necessary legal action

Shanghai-born Keqi Wu - also known as Chi Chi or Jessica spent a total of £35,000 advertising her 12-hour a day "massage businesses"

Shanghai-born Keqi Wu - also known as Chi Chi or Jessica - when the sex premises at Lantern Court, in Ely, were raided by police. At the time of the raid on August 1 last year a Chinese girl was "working" at the flat and items linked to prostitution including large numbers of condoms - were found there, Cambridge Crown Court heard.
A Chinese man was also on the premises at the time of the raid, which was part of a nationwide initiative to crack down on people-trafficking linked to prostitution. The same man was found during a raid at another brothel in Norwich a week later, where 42-year-old Wu was also discovered, Sally Hickling, for the prosecution, told the court.Paperwork - including bank accounts which showed credits of £81,000 in 2007 alone - linked Wu to the Lantern Court address.Wu, who had spent a total of £35,000 advertising her 12-hour a day "massage businesses" in Ely and Norfolk, also owned a nail parlour.Wu, a qualified masseuse and beautician who had previously lived in Australia and had been married to a doctor, admitted two charges of managing the two brothels. She claimed the businesses had begun legitimately but the girls, working on a self-employed basis, began providing sex for customers as a means of making extra money.Roger Harrison, representing Wu, told the court: "These were free, adult women. What began to happen, bit by bit, was that they began providing sexual services. And, bit by bit, Ms Wu turned a blind eye."There was no question of exploitation here. These were independent, free adults happy to perform the services they did and the businesses were, partly, developed through the insistence of the clients".Wu provided the premises, housekeeping and advertising and took a cut of the takings, but did not offer sex herself, the court was told.Wu is one of three Chinese women charged with keeping brothels in Cambridgeshire. A Proceeds of Crime hearing will be held at a later date to determine by how much she benefited from the enterprise, and how much can be confiscated.

Promiscuous Girlz brothel will have ten bedrooms which will have themes, including the All Blacks and Dominatrix

Teresa McGregor says her customers will be able to enjoy what they pay for in a number of carefully chosen theme rooms, one of which will be based on New Zealand's most masculine attraction. It is still a work in progress, but by the end of next month an existing building will be transformed into Dannevike's first brothel, to be called Promiscuous Girlz. "I think it's intriguing and every town deserves one. A lot of people are interested in using the service," says McGregor.
McGregor bought the historic Public Trust building with the vision of turning it into hotel with a café underneath - but later decided on a rather different business venture. "The research I did showed that accommodation was covered and there were so many food outlets I could just see my business or another business closing," says McGregor. The brothel will have ten bedrooms which will have themes, including the All Blacks and Dominatrix. So far a gay man and a straight man have been hired to work in the brothel and McGregor hopes to have five high class ladies hired before the opening next month.
She is targeting not just locals but clients from across Hawke's Bay as well as the Manawatu, and believes there is a demand. "People keep saying we can't wait until August and I keep saying you have to wait, and it'll be worth it," says McGregor.A Northland GP tried opening a small town brothel at Cooper's n 2006 but fierce opposition and lack of interest saw him close the doors after just five months.
Dannevirke's locals, however, seem a bit more tolerant. "We gotta give these guys a go I suppose," one told 3 News, while another laughed and said: "Good for the young ones I suppose." Coopers Beach is not the only small town where a brothel has failed, last year Carterton's only legal brothel closed because of a lack of interest. Now it remains to be seen if the Dannevirke locals will be more accommodating.

Bordellos in Watford Way, Hendon, and nearby Kenton Road, Harrow. A third massage parlour, where Eastern European and oriental girls offered clients "
David Howard, 41, of Canvey Road, Canvey, helped operate the business by hiring girls and managing two brothels.David Howard, his mum Adele Lubin, 62, and uncle Spencer Rolfe, 61, were all involved.Lubin used her two beauty businesses as fronts for bordellos in Watford Way, Hendon, and nearby Kenton Road, Harrow. A third massage parlour, where Eastern European and oriental girls offered clients "extras", was set up above a busy shopping parade in The Broadway, Mill Hill. The three defendants were arrested last year after a lengthy police probe in which undercover police officers were offered sex and a female officer was offered a job as a prostitute.Phillip Bennetts, prosecuting, said: "The premises were searched and it was quite apparent they were being used for the provision of sexual services, for example a large number of condoms were recovered."Lubin owned the brothels in Watford Way and in Kenton Road, but a third property in The Broadway was rented by Rolfe under a fake name.Rolfe, a masseur of Green Avenue, Mill Hill, had placed an advert for staff in a magazine which was answered by an undercover police officer.
Judge Martin Beddoe told the David Howard, Lubin and Rolfe they would be sentenced for the crimes, which took place between December 1, 2006 and April 24, 2007, next month.Granting them bail, he said: "This is not to be taken as an indication that you will not receive a custodial sentence."After the verdict, David Howard's father Ray, county and borough councillor for Canvey, said he was "utterly devastated" and insisted his son was innocent. He said: "David is well-known locally as having a good heart and the public support I have received for him during this time has been overwhelming."Neither his family or his friends could believe David would knowingly involve himself in any criminal activity."In my view David was in the wrong place at the wrong time. I will continue to give support to my son David, as any dad would."
